North Fly Health Services Development Program (PNG)

Client: OK Tedi Mining Limited

The North Fly Health Services Development Program (NFHSDP) is a community health program working in partnership with existing health providers to improve the health of people in North Fly District, Western Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG).

This partnership aims to achieve sustainable health improvements through strengthening the existing health system. The NFHSDP is being implemented in line with the National Department of Health (NDoH) Strategic Plan and priorities. The NDoH priorities, and therefore a number of the NFHSDP’s 12 objectives, include reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria, TB and other diseases.

The NFHSDP is an initiative of the Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) Managing Director and the OTML Board. In 2008, Abt JTA was requested to develop a solution for improving health service provision across the North Fly District, including how OTML could best support this solution. The proposed program addressed the main causes of illness and death, the priority areas needed for improvement to strengthen health service delivery, and provided suggestions for improved collaboration between all health service providers in the district. The OTML Board approved the proposal and committed PGK 20 million over five years for the program.

In November 2013, OTML extended funding for the NFHSDP for a further 5 years, to consolidate the achievements of 2009 – 2013 and to continue to revitalise and embed the primary health care approach in North Fly District.
